A rift is a doorway to another place or time. It appears as an unstable vortex of green energy.

In episode 110 - Parallel Terror, the rift was caused by an unexpected power overload of a device created by Sniper.He hooked up a computer powered by a stream of cold energy tapped from the NX Secret without realising the immense power he was using.

Luckily NXISS was able to prevent a massive implosion of matter and anti-matter by killing the power at the right time.

This event caused a fluctuation in the space/time continuum which resulted in a worm-hole like anomaly. 

As bad luck would have it, Golock has instructed his minions to create a device that can produce a rift to predetermined places and times.
